Currently having a moment of “grief” with this piece🥹 I’ve been working on it on and off for about a year, and I think it’s time to set it aside for now and dive into some new repertoire. Although I adore this piece so much I’m already looking forward to the next time I relearn it🥰 Letting go always comes with mixed emotions. I’m incredibly grateful for the journey — for how much this piece has pushed me and helped me grow — but I’ve never quite felt fully satisfied performing it. There are always many things I wish had come across better. But I guess that’s the nature of it — of music, of growth, of life💃🏻 One of the biggest things I’ve gained from working on this piece is learning to let go of my ego when it comes to performing. I finally feel at peace with the idea that a performance not going how I hoped doesn’t make me a bad musician or artist — it just means there’s room to grow, and I’ll try again next time. Showing up and trying is enough. That might sound simple, but it’s taken me years to truly believe it. Detaching my self-worth from how I play has really helped me take a more objective view of performing, and honestly, it’s made it easier to get out of my own head — both in music and outside of it. Been getting so many dms about why I like playing contemporary music or how I feel about them. One of the tricky things about playing/listening to contemporary music is that it might not always be our favorite way of making sound, or the music is not easiest to listen to. But the meaning behind what some contemporary composers are doing really isn’t all that different from what the classical composers we love were doing. In the end, aren’t we all just trying to express something about our lives—our experiences, our society, what it means to be alive, where we come from? Maybe sometimes even escaping reality a little? Of course—who doesn’t love the classics? Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven… the list goes on. There are tons of reasons why those legends are still so beloved after all these years. But sometimes, I don’t think what we personally prefer is always the most important thing—it’s more about what the art is trying to say. That’s not to say our preferences don’t matter—they absolutely do. But I’ve noticed that very often, our strongest reactions are pretty immediate and emotional. We tend to feel first and think later, which can make it harder to fully take in what the work is actually offering. It’s something I’m trying to be more aware of—just giving the art a little more space before jumping to a judgment.
